All UHNA Chairs and Executive positions are elected at the end of each year. This year there are some vacant positions and some Interim Chairs to be voted in for the next year. Also our esteemed Treasurer Beth Stedman has signaled she will not be available next year. If you'd like to contribute to the community in this way please drop us a line at [email protected]. You can learn more about the positions in the bylaws and by reading the Position Descriptions. If heading a sub-committee is not your thing but you'd like to help out, please also get in touch and let us know what kinds of things you're interested in. UHNA always welcomes community input and feedback. The Leadership contacts are available on the website.
UHNA NPU-D Rep Eva Nason and Safety Chair Cynthia Williams attended the ZRB meeting on behalf of the neighborhood last Thursday, along with NPU-D Chair Jim Martin and UWCID Executive Director Elizabeth Hollister. The item of interest to us is the Billboard Legislation sponsored by 8 Councillors that would allow a company to upgrade large billboards without any planning process or approval. This was the last opportunity for community input before going before Council. Jim Martin spoke to clarify the NPU voted to Deny the application (after the company lawyer tried to make out the vote was in favor!), Elizabeth outlined how the proposed legislation goes against many established planning rules, including existing planning Code, the Upper Westside Development Plan and the Beltline Overlay, and Cynthia spoke for the UHNA, highlighting the negative impacts for Underwood Hills and the united community opposition. The City's own staff report recommended Denial of the application (see below) and the ZRB also voted to recommend Denial, however these only act in an Advisory capacity to Council, which could ignore the outcome (it has happened before). Councillor Dustin Hillis is working to have the Howell Mill Rd signs removed from the Ordinance, but he doesn't sit on the committee that will make the decision, so please write to Sponsors you have a connection with, or to our own rep Councillor Hillis to urge the committee not to enable negative impacts on Underwood Hills. UHNA will inform the community once we know when this will be considered by the relevant committee. Our illustrious crew represented the neighborhood with a tent and table at Westside Stride last Sunday, featuring UHNA Store merchandise, Safety with UHERO and Firedrill signup, and Membership Chair Mary with Membership and Security Patrol enrollment. Special thanks to Mary, Hanan and Cynthia for organizing, to Eugen and Teen Volunteers for helping out, and to UWCID for hosting. Together they raised $264 for UHNA. One casualty of the recent storm was the Playground. A large tree crushed part of the equipment. Quick action by the Some Lovely Neighbors! (not the City) removed the tree. Now comes arranging repairs. UHNA Beautification Chair Seaver Lippit available for queries. Molly Ryan with Friends of Underwood Hills Park is coordinating the equipment supplier Playground Creations for a swift resolution. They have inspected and will determine a plan for restoration this week. ZONING REVIEW BOARD OCTOBER 3, 2024 6:00 P.M., CITY COUNCIL CHAMBERS, SECOND FLOOR
This is the same matter on which a resolution was adopted at NPU-D, and was again voted against at the last NPU-D meeting. Please write council members requesting they amend the legislation in line with the NPU-D resolution or vote against the ordinance. 3. Z-24-59 An Ordinance by Councilmembers Matt Westmoreland, Michael Julian Bond, Amir Farokhi, Liliana Bakhtiari, Alex Wan, Andrea L. Boone, Marci Collier Overstreet and Antonio Lewis to authorize the removal of 103 privately owned billboard faces and their supporting structures, permitted under Part 16, Chapter 28A of the 1982 Zoning Ordinance of the City of Atlanta, as amended, in exchange for the right given to their owners to upgrade and/or relocate 27 billboard faces and their supporting structures; and for other purposes. Please join us and a number of leading community organizations in Atlanta this Thursday, October 3 at 6:00pm at the IBEW Building for Atlanta City Council Post 3 At-Large Forum. RSVP HERE At the heart of everything the Center for Civic Innovation does is a belief that local politics matter. The policies and decisions that are made on a local level - whether in City Hall or at neighborhood meetings - have an outsized impact on the day-to-day lives of Atlantans. And yet despite this, the elections that decide who will fill critical leadership roles in this city have woefully low turn-out. CCI is on a mission to change that. For ten years, we have hosted programming during election seasons (which, as Georgians know, is year-round) to bring attention to candidates and their platforms for the future of the city. From UHNA Traffic Chair Rob Wheeler; We had 65 responses! Awesome that so many people were willing to respond. As expected, the return of the “don’t block the box” was the winner of the survey. I had a call with Dusin Hills last week and he is working on having that returned as quickly as possible. We also discussed traffic calming in the area, and he is working with the submitting a traffic study for Ridgeway, which will occur in the next 90 days. Lastly we discussed pedestrian crossing in the Defoor Ave area, and we discussed that the Upper Westside CID is currently working on a large path connecting from Howell Mill that will include more sidewalks in the area. Dustin mentioned that the CID is going to provide more details soon. [email protected] |
