Eva Nason was born in 1940 of a North Georgia farmer mom and an Ohio traveling-man dad who came to Atlanta to teach a WPA class. She has mostly lived at 1743 and 1747 Harper St., homes her mom and her mom’s mom bought in 1945, with large side lots to farm, dirt streets and no sewer. For grades 1–7, Eva walked to E.P. Howell Elementary (where Kroger is now), then attended O’Keefe High and took a B.A. at Emory in languages, wanting to travel. Lots of jobs and three years of teaching allowed her to live in Germany, Ireland, Denver, NH and NY, with month-long travels over the U.S. and Canada camping in a VW Vanagon. At 36, she married an Albuquerque man she met while working at Emory, and they raised a daughter and son at renovated 1743 Harper, with the children attending E. Rivers and N. Atlanta High to go on to U. of Chicago and Indiana U. With the working-class residential area along Defoor and Bellemeade in steep decline thru the 1960s and early 1970s, Eva argued against re-zoning property along her mom’s back line for industrial use. That began well more than a decade of constant non-residential zoning applications she would oppose. Soon after the first re-zoning case, she gathered seven neighbors on the large front porch at 1743 Harper, and they established a neighborhood organization for the area they somewhat later named Underwood Hills. Many of the zoning cases Eva argued were for properties along Bellemeade, until finally Berkeley Park established its own organization and broke away from Underwood Hills. In these later years, with her husband now deceased, Eva has concentrated on maintaining her property as best she can, continuing UH involvement and working on an “intellectual” endeavor still underway. It is her hope that eventually her property will contribute to Atlanta’s green space rather than to its now very expensive housing stock, but if not not green space, then at least to truly affordable housing with lots of valued trees and greenery.
