from NPU-D Chair James Martin: Some may recall the egregious actions of the development Authority of Fulton County (DAFC) were discussed when Commissioner Dana Barrett spoke to UHNA in at the October Meeting . In particular, we discussed the proposed $32 million tax abatement that DAFC was considering for Tilford Yard. That is on the DAFC agenda Tuesday Dec 5 along with another data center tax break that will cost us $10 million and go directly into the pocket of the world's richest man. If any from Underwood Hills is interested, I am organizing folks to speak against these deals at tomorrow's DAFC meeting at 2:00pm Fulton County Government Center 141 Pryor Street, SW, Atlanta, GA 30303. If you can attend please contact James Martin2023 Chairperson NPU-D Home: 404-351-6949 Work: 404-894-6794 email: [email protected] For those who can't attend, my friend Julian is organizing an email writing campaign. I believe that he was quoted in the AJC article on commercial under-assessments. His email to those who are concerned about this is copied below. Please distribute it to anyone (or everyone) in your neighborhood that you think would be interested. "Friends, We need to stop Fulton Development Authority from granting $42M in property tax breaks - cutting school, city and county revenues - for two data center projects that will happen with no incentive and that bring little or no public benefit. One is at Tilford Yard and the other is for Musk’s Twitter. Atlanta is in a data center ‘gold rush’ per the leading commercial brokers, so it is outrageous for DAFC to offer breaks. DAFC could not get the votes for the QTS tax break last Spring thanks to our outcry. QTS is completing their data center sans incentive. We need to repeat that public outcry to DAFC board, who still may narrowly have a persuadable majority. So please send a quick email to the following address protesting against the data center breaks on Tuesday’s agenda. Best, Julian" [email protected] Suggested message - variants are fine of course: Dear Ms Coleman Please share this email with the board at the Dec 5 meeting. As a Fulton taxpayer, I respectfully request board members to reject both proposed tax breaks for data center projects. In the data center gold rush that Atlanta is experiencing , it is fiscally irresponsible to offer incentives. Tax revenues are precious and we residents expect you to act accordingly. Sincerely Your name and address Address of 2pm meeting; Fulton County Government Center 141 Pryor Street, SW, Atlanta, GA 30303 from BCN (UHNA is a member of BCN) This is an important election and Early Voting is underway at the Buckhead Library for this December 5th runoff. Turnout is very important. "We need to keep someone on the board that has their eye on the budget and make sure we revisit the tax exemptions for seniors this year. Please make a plan to vote early or on December 5th." From UHNA NPU-D Rep Eva Nason;
Regarding the boarded-up property on Davis Cir. with the variance sign in front of it, this involves an application to be heard at the Dec. 7 Board of Zoning Adjustment (BZA) Hearing requesting that the frontyard set-back requirement be waived in favor of letting a new house be built using the same set-back that existed for the old house because of the size and shape of the lot. There was a lot of discussion of the matter in particular as regarded the saving of the existing large trees. The residents of the Davis Cir. community were included in this discussion preliminary to a vote being taken at the November 28 NPU-D meeting as to whether to approve this variance application. When it was realized that the building of the proposed house more to the front of the lot, which would be allowed by this reduced frontyard set-back - that this would be conducive to saving the trees, the general sense then was to approve this variance at the NPU-D meerting, which was done. As said, there is a public hearing about this matter on Thursday, December 7 at the BZA Hearing at City Hall. From UHNA NPU-D Rep Eva Nason;
It has been my intention to let my neighbors know that the hoped-for 2 year pause in a property owner being able to apply to rezone a property again after having done so and lost, possibly does not apply to the situation of a zoning application having been "filed" by the City Council rather than the application having been voted down by the Zoning Review Board (ZRB). This was the situation for the rezoning application for 1692 Springer St. The ZRB voted to approve the application in spite of our NPU-D vote of 98-6 against it. When we protested the ZRB vote to the City Council and our Council member, Dustin Hillis, the City Council did what it can do. That is, it did not proceed in the next step necessary in order for an application to become legal, which is give its approval of the application. Instead, the Council "filed" the application. This may mean that we, as a neighborhood, need to stay vigilant as to any future attempts to change the status of the property at 1692 Springer. I have asked, but have not received, a definitive answer as to possible future occurances. It is my hope that the new construction going up on the adjoining Defoor lots will eventually play a role in helping to favorably resolve issues with this Springer property. |
