The restaurant on 1201 Collier Rd NW Atlanta, GA 30318, known to many residents as ‘DePalma’s
Porch’ has got a fresh coat of paint- but not only that. According to information obtained by the Underwood Hills Neighborhood Association (UHNA), it has undergone extensive remodeling and is about to be re-launched as a Hookah Lounge. Hookah Lounges have a long tradition and originate from Persia/ India as a place where a ‘Hookah’ also known as Shisha or waterpipe is smoked and typically drinks and snacks are served. The modern version that has become trendy in recent years, especially among students typically serves alcoholic drinks and is often more of a nightclub with music and dancing. In recent years Hookah Lounges got a bad reputation in Atlanta after some incidents involving violence. Although this side of Collier roads does not technically belong to Underwood Hills, we are in touch with relevant bodies, local politicians, and the chair of the neighboring NPU-C to better understand what is planned as it will directly affect our neighborhood, in particular residents in Collier Green right opposite on Collier Rd. We will have this topic on the agenda for our upcoming Neighborhood Meeting on Monday, April 11 at ‘The Works’ (and virtual via Zoom) and have invited Courtney Smith, President of Midtown Neighbors Association, and one of the founders of https://www.clearatl.org/, and an appointee serving on the ATAG3, a task force assembled to address liquor license reforms of policy, procedure, and legislation.
