Farewell Major Reginald Moorman, Hello Major Kristin Knight

3/12/2025

Dear Zone 1 Community Members,            (Zone 1 encompasses the Northwest side of Atlanta.   Some neighborhoods in Zone 1 include Ashview Heights, the Atlanta University Center, Collier Heights, Hunter Hills, Vine City, Washington Park, and West Lake.)

As my time serving as your Police Commander over the past three years comes to a close, I wanted to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude for the trust and support you’ve shown me and my team. It has been an honor to serve alongside such a dedicated group of officers and community members, and I am proud of what we’ve accomplished together in this vibrant, diverse area.

Throughout my tenure, we’ve worked hard to create a safer, stronger Zone 1, and I am pleased to share a few of our key accomplishments:

  1. Reduced Violent Crime & Gun Violence
  2. Through these efforts and more, we’ve been able to reduce overall crime by 10% so far in 2025 and achieve the second-lowest crime rate across all Zones in 2022 and 2024. Our efforts also earned us the Atlanta Police Department 2023 Crime Reduction Award.
  3. Addressed violent crime and gun violence at the Citgo (3657 Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive), significantly reducing incidents.
  4. Community Engagement and Safety Initiatives
  5. Rolled out Foot Patrols, Bicycle Patrols, and a team of Community Liaison Officers to address real-time quality of life concerns.
  6. Engaged with the community through events such as National Night Out and Neighborhood/Business Watch initiatives.
  7. Created the Zone 1 Citizen Advisory Board, ensuring diverse community representation.
  8. Appointed a Gang Liaison on the Crime Suppression Team to assist with gang conflict alongside the APD Gang Unit.
  9. Tackling Specific Neighborhood Issues
·       Provided steering wheel locks to combat Kia/Hyundai thefts until a sustainable solution was provided by the manufacturers.
·       Developed a Shoplifting/Larceny Liaison to combat thefts at key retailers such as Family Dollar, Dollar General, and Dollar Tree.
·       Established an Apartment Liaison and held quarterly meetings with apartment managers to address specific issues.
  1. Collaborations with Local Institutions
  2. Fostered partnerships with local colleges and universities including Atlanta University Center Consortium Police Departments: Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College, Morehouse School of Medicine, and Spelman College.
  3. Fostered partnerships with the Washington High School, Douglass High School, and KIPP clusters along with the Atlanta Public Schools Police Department.
  4. Support for Local Events and Culture
·       Assisted with the planning and successful execution of the Caribbean Festival at West Side Park.
·       Formed a dedicated team of officers to mitigate the impact of large-scale events at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium on the Vine City community, addressing quality of life concerns such as illegal vending, parking, and traffic disruptions. This proactive approach ensured minimal disruption for residents while prioritizing their safety and daily needs.
·       Developed and implemented plans of action for seasonal needs including Summer, Spring Break, and Holiday planning.
  1. Specialized Public Safety Efforts
·       Participated in Operation Firearms Summer Surge (2022) and the Gun Violence Summer Initiative with the FBI/ATF (2022).
·       Played an integral role in the creation of the public safety plan for the Bowen Homes Choice Neighborhoods project.

I am thrilled to introduce Major Kristin Knight ([email protected]) as my successor. She is an exceptional leader, deeply committed to serving this community. I am confident she will continue the work we’ve started, and with her leadership, Zone 1 will continue to thrive.

Thank you once again for the privilege of serving as your Commander. On Thursday, March 20, 2025, I will begin my new role as the Special Operations Section Commander for the Atlanta Police Department.  I will always cherish my time in Zone 1 and will remain committed to supporting this community. I am proud of all we’ve accomplished together, and I look forward to watching Zone 1 continue to grow and flourish.

Warm regards,

Major Reginald Moorman
Atlanta Police Commander, Zone 1
