As many of you are already aware, GA DOT has started their Peachtree/AMTRAK Bridge project, which will require the temporary closure of Deering Road.  Please see the message below from Rick Parham, with GA DOT, regarding the length of the closure and the necessary detour.

You may also read a full article regarding the closure at the Midtown Path.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our office or Mr. Parham at the e-mail address listed below.

A reminder for your neighborhoods: Deering Road will be closed to through traffic beginning Monday, Jan. 7, to allow for positioning of a crane to facilitate bridge decking repairs at the AMTRAK station. The closure will continue through June. This is the project GDOT engineers discussed with the Council last summer.

Local residents will still able to use Deering; detour signs are in place and maintained by City of Atlanta with police enforcement.

As far as the recent criminal acts in the area, the armed robbery at Houston’s and the carjacking at the library, I want to assure you we are just as concerned as you and are actively working several leads on these cases.

The area is getting increased patrols with both uniformed and plain clothed units.  Supervisors have also been instructed to conduct checkpoints in the area as well.

Citizens can do several things to assist the police department in the deterrence of crime and the apprehension of criminals.

1.       Be vigilant about your surroundings.

Too many times victims of crime, especially in robberies, are talking on their phones, carrying items, or doing other things, normally late at night that make them easy targets.  Most pedestrian robberies are crimes of opportunity and victims are targeted based upon their vulnerability and attentiveness.

2.       Call the Police.

We have a “See Something, Say Something” campaign within the City of Atlanta where we encourage that citizens call in suspicious activity or persons to the police department.

If something or someone does not look right or feel right, causing the hair on the back of your neck to stick up, call 911 let us know of the suspicious activity or person.  We will come out and investigate.

If you have any other questions or have any other concerns please let me know.  If you would like to discuss this further you can contact me at 404-848-7231.

Great article in the Midtown Patch about the question of what to call our area of town west of Buckhead. How do you describe where you live when describing Underwood Hills?
